We are a group of students of Human Resource Management from XLRI School of Business and Human Resources, Jamshedpur, who are working for the cause of underprivileged children.
Issue : Here, there is a public private partnership model in force, wherein private schools have started operating 'afternoon schools' for underprivileged children at a nominal/no fee. These schools are currently catering to close to 3000 children and many more such partnerships are slated to be under operation next year. Once these children pass out from schools, they are left helpless. They do not have any resources to fund their higher education or pursue any vocation. Suggestion : We are looking to develop a way through which they can collect funds over their schooling period and use this deposit later for sponsoring their education or training. We came to know about the CDBs recently and we believe that building a CDB here could be a sustainable solution. The accumulated funds with interest accrued would be able to support their investments. Our Involvement : We have identified local NGOs in Jamshedpur which are working for children and would be able to support a CDB. We would act as a link between bringing you on the same platform and initiate the CDB and gather more support. It would be of immense help if you could give us more details about the functioning of CDBs and its feasibility here considering the fact that only 30% of these children are working. We would be glad if you could provide us your guidelines of CDB operation or any other information.

I am a 24-year-old woman residing in Noida. A 2006-batch MBA in Human Resources from International Management Institute (IMI), New Delhi, I have been working with JK Paper Ltd. as Assistant Manager (HRD) since June 2006.
One year into the job has left me somewhat disillusioned. I realise that while I am making money for myself, I am not contributing to my society the way I have always wanted to. I wish to change a small part of the society I live in, and I feel such change must come from the grassroot. I therefore intend to work for children - street children, working children, and those deprived of the childhood that they most definitely deserve. Having had an immensely happy and fulfilling childhood myself, I believe these children do have a right to be educated and to live a life of dignity. For the past few months, I have spoken with street children at various traffic signals of Noida. I have found that they have a desire to study, but face resistance from their families who want them to beg or earn (through selling balloons, toys, books, etc. at signals) a few extra rupees. However, I have not been able to successfully convince them (and more so, their families). They feared my ideas and were clearly suspicious of my intentions. Some even thought I wanted to sell their children (especially daughters) to rich men and that is why I came to them. They did not take kindly to my talk and were extremely apprehensive of the "'memsahib' who was trying to be too friendly". I realised that what I lack is the backing of an organization of repute. And that is how I discovered Butterflies. I have read about your esteemed organisation, having extensively researched your website, and I wish to know how I can contribute in my way to my dream of ensuring a happy childhood for deprived children. I may not have relevant experience in education, but I do possess the passion and sensitivity to work on my dreams. My areas of interest in your organisation would be the following: (a) Education programme (b) Alternate media project, particularly the "National Children's Times" and the "Bal Rang Manch" (c) Awareness generation programme I have delved in theatre and music throughout my school and college days, and organised events for our annual fest during both years of my MBA. I also organised the college fest in my first and second years of graduation, garnering support from the faculty, administration and fellow students alike. Apart from this, I have been active in several external events in B-schools across the nation. I have successfully launched school and college magazines in the capacity of Co-editor and Chief Editor respectively, and had been an active member of the Newspapers in Education (NIE) initiative of the Times of India for three years in school. I have also written for local newspapers and community magazines. I may also add that I am fluent and strong in Hindi and English - both spoken and written, so language need not be a barrier in my endeavours. I have a passion for singing and plan to pursue vocal Hindustani classical music actively. I have been an avid reader ever since I remember. I am a natural at building quick relationships with children, and, more importantly, keeping them. I would, in the near future, like to start an independent facility of my own to help street children live a better life than they presently do. This would primarily include education (the three Rs - reading, writing, recitation), vocational avenues, health awareness and hygiene consciousness. I would be extremely grateful if you could give me a chance to be a part of your initiatives. I shall also be able to quit my job and take up working with Butterflies full-time in whichever capacity that suits both Butterflies and me.

\we are a registered voluntary organization, helping children to have quality education in the rural mountain area of Akhori, Ghansali area in Tehri Garhwal, Uttarakhand. We have been sponsoring nearly 300 kids too. Since the school wants to grow but we find difficult to get support for infrastructure to run the programs. It is also true that without infrastructure such as classrooms and other things it would be hard to run the program successfully. Can Butterflies help us in this as the community around is very poor and most people have to work outside villages due to low income.

We are a UK charity working exclusively in Nigeria for the health and education of children at risk and their caregivers.
We are about to launch our Overseas Volunteers Programme in conjunction with a reputable British University offering a childhood studies degree programme. Our volunteers will be undergraduates and post-graduates with a stake in childhood development. I have been told by Shoilen Nandy of the School of Policy at Bristol University that Rita Panicker is very experienced in volunteer managment especially with regard to youths who are volunteers. Our volunteers will be with us running appropriate courses for five week periods, for children in orphanages. They will be housed by the British High Commission staff, in lagos when they come down from the field to Lagos for some rest and recuperation. Do you have advice and recommendations to make about managing a team of young volunteers (19 - 23 years old) in that situation? Case studies etc I would deeply appreciate your mentoring on the issue of our Overseas Volunteers Programme. Many thanks, in anticipation... Ola Williams for: Sponsor A Child NG UK

Dear Bhavana
Butterflies has been working with street and working children in Delhi since 1989 and our mission is to empower these children by providing them knowledge and skills. Therefore, education is our main programme and all other programmes and activities add value to their education and contribute to the same goal. We have a qualified and skilled team engaging/ educating the children on a daily basis. Over the years we have developed our education programme, created systems for tracking progress of children and monitoring mechanisms. Therefore, we could help new agencies like yours in building the programmes by giving relevant trainings. Do let us know how and when you would like to associate with us. Best Regards, Butterflies Family

With respect to partnering with Butterflies, we work with registered organizations as we sign MOU with all our partners. It would be better if you register your group through a proper channel. However, the children can participate in the Cultural Evening organized on every first Tuesday of the month at India Gate. They can also participate in the Sports Day.
