What do we have to do under the "I care for children" campaign?
Posted by anshu kukreja on 30-05-2008
By paying a nominal fee of Rs 50 (postage cost extra) you can join the movement. You'll be given a Badge and a Booklet of Obligations that would identify you as a person who is really concerned about children. At the same time you would also be seen as a responsible citizen who can be approached at times of distress.
Joining the movement would also mean that you are available to help as a volunteer in times of emergency, disaster, accident which affects children. You are willing and available to participate in orientation programmes organized to help improve knowledge and skills for working effectively on children's issues. You'll seize all opportunities in your neighbourhood, workplace and surrounding to speak about children and you will do all in your power to provide all care and protection for children, be aware of and respect all their rights. Apart from the above, a very important obligation would be the promotion of "I Care for Children" movement amongst your colleagues, family and friends.

How can I be a part of the "I Care for Children" campaign? I'd love to help Butterflies - as a volunteer or as a full-time employee.

How many street children are there in delhi and how many among them are females?
Posted by aakanksha on 15-03-2008
Dear Aakanksha,
It is estimated that 42% of Delhi's population are children. There are 20, 16,849 children in the age group of 0-6 years of whom 18, 58,689 live in the urban areas of the NCR . The Delhi Human Development Report 2006 acknowledges the existence of Street and Working children but fails to give any concrete figure to their numbers. The report draws an estimation of children living on their own on the streets at 50,000. But then these are estimations that are based on empirical assumptions. There are no definite data on the number of street children in Delhi. However, organisations who work with street and working children are of the opinion that there are much over 4,00,000 street and working children living in the streets of Delhi. One can only go by such calculated guess estimations. According to a headcount survey conducted by Ashray Adhikar Abhiyan in January 2007, there are 7000 homeless women in Delhi and over 150,000 without shelter in the national capital. As per department of labour 1992, there are 4,00,000 street and working children in Delhi. Butterflies estimates there are around 50,000 street children who live by themselves in the city. There is no estimate of the number of street girls in Delhi They are few mostly living with families. SOURCE: 1 Economic Survey of Delhi, 2005-2006. Planning Department, Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi. 2 Delhi Human Development Report 2006, p. 31

WHERE IS THE CDB IN KOLKATA LOCATED?
THIS IS A GREAT INITIATIVE TAKEN BY BUTTERFLIES

Posted by SAHARSH TIBREWAL on 05-03-2008
Dear Mr. Tibrewal, Thank you for appreciating Children's Development Bank, a project conceptualized and initiated by Butterflies in April 2001, as a vehicle to empower street and working children. It is also a facility for safe keeping of children's hard earned money. The thrust is on giving working children life skill education in saving, budgeting, accounts keeping and basics of running a co-operative bank. The uniqueness of CDB is that the clients are the owners of the bank and run and manage the bank. The bank is now operational in 6 countries of the region excepting for Bhutan and Maldives and in 5 cities including rural areas in India. In Kolkata our partner organization is Mayurbhanj Joint Citizen Centre whose details are as follows: Contact Person : Mr. S.M. Yusuf, Secretary Phone: 033- 4495446, 4496415, Address: Mayurbhanj Joint Citizen Centre Admn. Office: 39, Mominpur Road, Kolkata - 700 023 Registered office: 4, Mayurbhanj Road, Kolkata 700023

What is the meaning of UNCRC?
Posted by Md.nazim on 18-01-2008
Dear Nazim
United Nation Convention on the Rights of the Child is an international human rights treaty that grants all children and young people (aged 17 and under) a comprehensive set of rights. It is historic as it was unanimously accepted by all the participants. UNCRC has transformed children's needs into rights. Apart from Somalia and USA, all countries of the world have ratified UNCRC. The UN Assembly does not recognize the government in Somalia and thus it is not part of UNCRC and with respect to USA, its government can give death penalty to children and allows 18-year-old to join the army which is not acceptable to UNCRC. India ratified UNCRC in 1992. There are four main rights defined by UNCRC which are as follows: Right to Survival Right to Development Right to Protection Right to Participation Best regards, Butterflies Family

Butterflies' programmes towards street-living children are exemplary, approaching them as competent social actors, capable of expressing their opinions and making decisions autonomously in the context where society perceive them as either 'delinquents' or 'hapless victims'. I am interested to know if Butterflies had any programme that engage street-living children who have passed 18 years? What happens to these children who have attained the status of an 'adult'?

Dear Butterflies,
I went through the website and found it very interesting. You are doing amazing work and I would like to know how can me and my friends be of help to Butterflies?

Posted by Swati Anand on 05-09-2007
Dear Swati, Thank you for showing interest and appreciating Butterflies work. There are a number of activities that you and your friends can do. These are: a) Raise money for Butterflies events like Cultural Evening that is held on first Tuesady of every month at India Gate or for the Sports Day. b) Give in kind. At the moment we urgently require 200 blankets for our children in the night shelter. c) You can order meals from our Community Kitchen for any family get together or for any seminars, workshops in your school. d) You and your friends can be part of Butterflies initiated "I Care for Children" campaign We look forward for a long term association with you and your friends. Best Regards, Butterflies Family
