Brick By Brick

Meeta was 11 years old when she first started coming to the classes Butterflies holds for street and working children in the Old Delhi Railway Station. In this neighbourhood children and adults make a precarious living out of rag picking. Meeta couldn’t come everyday to this classroom on the platform. She would come every couple of days. She would paint, draw and was learning to read. There was something so special about this fiercely independent little girl that the street educator always asked about her each time she stayed away

So when Meeta didn’t turn up in class for two days in a row, the educator was not unduly worried. “Where is Meeta today?” he asked the children, more out of habit than anything else. There was a long silence. The children wouldn’t look at the educator. He knew something was wrong. He asked them again. Meeta, the children said, was lying bleeding in a deserted locomotive shed, because some men had done ‘bad things’ to her.

Both boys and girls who live and work on the streets are sexually abused by adults even as you read
this. These children need help. They need to be protected and supported.

Taking recourse to the law to prosecute the abuser is not enough. These abused children need a safe place where they can heal, both physically and emotionally.

Butterflies is in the process of constructing a Resilience Centre for Sexually Abused children that
would be a safe and caring place for these marginalized vulnerable children. The Resilience Center
will provide health care including mental health care and legal aid services and facilities for their recovery and in getting justice. It will also be a place for them to unwind and give vent to their inner turmoil
through different activities like theatre, sports, music, dance, art and craft etc.

We have identified a piece of land and have made a down payment for it. We need funds to buy this land and build a safe haven for children.
We are short of $ 52,000 and thus look up to you for support as it is YOU who can make a difference to their lives and be a partner in the process of their recovery.

With your action you will make a permanent contribution to the cause of abused children in the city of Delhi
